THE MOUNTAIN HORSES

A Kentucky Mountain Mare ridden by Kay Chiappetta

Mountain horses have been naturally bred in Kentucky since the mid-nineteenth century. But register was done recently. The first association was founded in 1986, named Rocky Mountain Horse Association. Other associations were formed afterwards, having in mind different goals. The gait is the same four beat lateral and the conformation differs very little. Today, there are also the Kentucky Mountain Saddle, the Spotted Mountain and the Mountain Pleasure horses.
Two associations were formed aiming to join the associations. In fact, horses are creatures that bring people together, rather than separate them. The United Mountain Horse, Inc (UMH) was formed in September 2000 by members of the existing breed associations that were interested in having an organization especially dedicated to promoting and exhibiting all the Mountain horses registered. The American Gaited Mountain Horse Association (AGMH) is the other one, with the same agenda. The fusion is not a dream, and certainly will contribute to a stronger Mountain Horse industry.
